This is a picture of a 1910 REO-S classic car. I took this picture when I attended the Ypsilanti classic car auto show in the summer of 2003. It was a warm day and there were so many classic cars that it took me all afternoon to get pictures of them. Both images were taken by me using my Canon Elan II 35mm film camera. It was great fun. The 1910 Reo was the first four-cylinder engine built by the company. The car features unique 36-inch tires and a 35-horsepower engine. It has a hand-crank starter. The REO (named for Ransom Eli Olds, the founder of Olsmobile) was built from 1904 to 1975. The company produced the classic-design automobiles for many years but later switched to building trucks and lawnmowers. Zaban noted one piece of trivia about the company -- the rock group REO Speedwagon took its name from one of the company's large, powerful trucks. |

The REO Motor Car Company was a Lansing, Michigan based company that produced automobiles and trucks from 1905 to 1975. At one point the company also manufactured buses on its truck platforms. REO was initiated by Ransom E. Olds during August 1904. Olds had 52 percent of the stock and the titles of president and general manager. To ensure a reliable supply of parts, he organized a number of subsidiary firms like the National Coil Company, theMichigan Screw Company, and the Atlas Drop Forge Company. Originally the company was to be called "R. E. Olds Motor Car Company," but the owner of Olds' previous company, then called Olds Motor Works, objected and threatened legal action on the grounds of likely confusion of names by consumers.[1]Olds then changed the name to his initials. Olds Motor Works soon adopted the popular name of its vehicles, Oldsmobile. Then instead of two "Olds" companies there were none. |
