I created this watercolor painting of one of my hand drills as a class assignment while attending Oakland Community College. As you can see, I had to paint something mechanical. My instructor was a purist—she would not allow any students to pencil anything in. We had to use only watercolor brushes and paints. If you look close, you can see the grain of wood in the cabinet. I didn't find this assignment too exciting, so I decided to put lots of extra details into this watercolor.
It is an objective, impressionistic, mechanical, still life painting that I enjoy looking back on now that many years have passed. The criteria for this assignment was so odd that it is the only watercolor painting I have that is like this.
I enjoyed the time I spent creating it. It was a rich and rewarding experience.
